1.2 Composition of Retrieval Codes

In Chapters 2 and 4, we will list all retrieval codes of GOVT and TAX according to the Table order in their respective publications. In Chapters 3 and 5, the same retrieval codes are listed alphabetically.

We hope you may easily find the retrieval codes for the data you need in Chapters 2-5. However, it might be helpful if you are familiar with how we construct these retrieval codes. Generally speaking, each retrieval code has two parts:

(1) The first part consists of a certain English abbreviation to represent a particular "concept" in government finance and tax statistics. For example:

NR -- Net Revenues
NE -- Net Expenditures
NCUR -- Net Current Revenues
NCAR -- Net Capital Revenues
NCUE -- Net Current Expenditures
NCAE -- Net Capital Expenditures
TX -- Taxes
TXC -- Commodity Tax
TINR -- Net Revenues of Income Tax
TIGR -- Gross Revenues of Income Tax

(2) The second part is a "modifier" following an "@" sign and placed right behind the initial English abbreviation. These modifiers are usually some English abbreviations representing a certain category in government finance and tax statistics. For example, "DEF" represents "National Defense", "EDU" represents "Education Science & Culture", "SS" represents "Social Security", and INDI represents "individual". Therefore, NE@DEF is the retrieval code for " Net Expenditures of General Gov't - for National Defense", NE@SS is the retrieval code for " Net Expenditures of General Gov't - for Social Security", TXC@SUGAR is the retrieval code for " Commodity Tax - Sugar", etc.
