1.2 Composition of Retrieval Codes

In Chapter 2, we will list all retrieval codes of CHINA according to the Table order in the publication.

We hope you may easily find the retrieval codes for the data you need in Chapter 2. However, it might be helpful if you are familiar with how we construct these retrieval codes. Generally speaking, each retrieval code has three parts and is composed as follows:

(1) The first part consists of a certain English abbreviation to represent a particular "concept" in the china statistics. For example:

    GDP -- Gross Domestic Product

    GNP -- Gross National Product

    C --  Consumption

    N -- Population

    E -- Employed Persons

    SW -- Staff & Workers

IF -- Investment in Fixed Assets

    CPI -- Consumer Price Index

    Q -- Output

    Q$ -- Gross Output Value

    RX -- Exchange Rate

    EX -- Exports

    M -- Imports

    RM -- Interest Rate

(2) The second part is a "modifier" following the initial English abbreviation. These modifiers are usually some English abbreviations representing a certain category in economic statistics. For example, "MFG" representing Manufacturing, "CON" representing Construction, "SOC" representing Social Services. Hence,

EMFG : NUMBER OF EMPLOYED PERSONS - MANUFACTURING
ECON : NUMBER OF EMPLOYED PERSONS - CONSTRUCTION
ESOC : NUMBER OF EMPLOYED PERSONS - SOCIAL SERVICES

(3) In fact, the principle of composing the retrieval codes of CHINA is the same as that for Taiwan's databanks. So the same series (For example, Population, GDP, CPI, and so on) have identical retrieval codes {(1)+(2) described above}. In order to differentiate them, we put "@PRC" (Abbreviation of the "People's Republic of China") as the final component for all retrieval codes in CHINA.
